Highlanders PCSL Squad Extends Unbeaten Streak To Six With 3-0 Win

The Victoria Highlanders PCSL squad (5W-2L-5D) continued their impressive form of late, Saturday afternoon at the University of Victoria, downing the Kelowna Wolfpack, 3-0 to extend their unbeaten streak to six matches.

Paddy Nelson opened scoring in match for the home side on a penalty kick opportunity. Nelson’s marker was followed in the first half with a goal from Craig Gorman. Highlander Sergio Duran added the third and final goal in the second half.

“I think Nico’s got the boys peaking at the right time,” commented veteran defender Dylan Kirk. “We added some veteran pieces and are three or four wins on the hop right now, which is brilliant, while only conceding two goals. It’s a big step forward for us. The mix of young and old on our team is deadly.”

The impressive win comes on the heels of last week’s decisive 5-1 win over Khasla Sporting Club, and will be followed up with a Sunday matinee against Penticton Soccer Club.

The Highlanders now sit at 19 points through 11 matches in the 2018 PCSL season, with an opportunity to leapfrog several teams into the top of the Premier Men’s table should they capture all three points again on Sunday.

The Highlanders third goal exemplified the Highlanders mix of youth and veteran talent in the lineup. Grade 11 player Sean Young started a rush forward with a quick give-and-go with Nelson that was finished by fellow high-schooler Duran to put the icing on the cake for the Victoria squad.

“For me in particular, I think my goal is to come in and help grow and nurture all the young guys we have on the team and create a positive environment,” added Kirk. “If I can teach them a couple things then great!”

The Highlanders return to the pitch Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m. PST at the University of Victoria’s Field 4. Admission to the match is free. For more information on the Highlanders organization, please visit www.highlandersfc.ca.
