Victoria Highlanders Men’s Soccer Recap: Highlanders fall to Rivers FC

July 2nd, 2022

On Saturday, July 2nd, the Victoria Highlanders made the long trek to Kamloops to play against Rivers FC. Conditions were tough, catching the 7:00am ferry, followed by a four and a half bus ride, and then playing in 30-degree heat on turf. But conditions aside, the Highlanders would not go down without a fight.

It was Rivers FC who would have the first chance of the game when a low shot bounced off the Highlanders goal post twice, before finding the safe hands of goalkeeper Trevor Schneider. This would serve as an early wake-up call for the Highlanders, and the visiting team began to take control of the match.

Highlanders best chance would come just before the water break, when Highlanders centre back, Cody Gysbers, got his head on the end of a cross, but couldn’t convert. Not long after, the Highlanders would have a second golden opportunity when forward, Michael Henman, found himself free inside the 18-yard box but couldn’t beat the Rivers goalkeeper.

The home team would take the lead in added time of the first half off the boot of defender, Daniel Sagno, who converted on a well struck penalty shot.

The Highlanders would come out swinging in the second half, creating a handful of opportunities and looking to bring the game level. However, it would be Rivers FC who would claim the second goal of the match when winger, Dylan Hooper, scored a brilliant solo effort from the top of the Highlanders 18-yard box in the 75th minute.

The visiting Highlanders would throw numbers forward in a valiant attempt to salvage a point from the match, but ultimately fell short, losing 2-0 to Rivers FC.
