Whitecaps top Highlanders in home opener at Centennial Stadium

After playing less than 24-hours earlier against Varsity FC, the Highlanders women had a big hurtle ahead of them as they took the field at Centennial Stadium to play against the undefeated Whitecaps FC Girls Elite.

The match started with both teams looking to control possession and break down the opposition. Neither team would give away anything early, being responsible and composed defensively. It wasn’t until the 34th minute that the deadlock would be broken, and it would go in favour of the Caps. Whitecaps attacker, Anna Hauer, would receive a pass from teammate Jamie Perrault, inside the box and made no mistake slotting it home.

The Highlanders would look to respond with a couple half-chances, but nothing convincing as the half ended and the Caps found themselves going into the tunnel with a one goal advantage.

The Caps would come out flying in the second half, putting the Highlanders on the back foot early as they doubled their lead in the 51st minute off a rebound in the box. Just two minutes later the Caps would strike again as Captain Clare Logan converted on a corner kick delivered by teammate, Olivia Ahern.

The Highlanders continued to battle and would almost get on the scoreboard as defender Mary Nicholls found herself on the end of a rebound inside the Whitecaps 18-yard box, but the Caps goalkeeper did well to keep her clean sheet.

Despite the Highlanders best efforts, The Caps would hold on to win 3-0 at Centennial Stadium and remain undefeated on the season. With the loss, the Highlanders move to a 0-3-0 record.
