Highlanders Sign Japanese Midfielder Atsuki Shimizu

VICTORIA, B.C. – Victoria Highlanders FC are pleased to announce the signing of Atsuki Shimizu, pending ITC and BC Soccer approval. The 19-year-old is the first midfield addition to Vikram Virk’s 2020 Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL) squad.

“Atsuki is a player with very good technical abilities. He is young, dynamic and has good feet,” stated Virk. “He is a welcome addition to the team. We are excited to have him here with us and we look forward to what he can contribute to the team moving forward."

Atsuki joins the Highlanders after a partnership agreement with Japanese professional club Grulla Morioka. Grulla play in the J3 League and in January 2019 the Highlanders made an affiliation agreement to partner with the club on player exchanges. The Japan native is the second player to join the Highlanders since the agreement. Atsuki is coming off a season with the Grulla Morioka Youth Team.

“I’m very excited for this chance and see this as a big opportunity,” Shimizu stated. “I want to come in and do my best for this team and continue to develop as a player. Whether that be scoring, or setting up my teammates, I want to do my best to help the Highlanders succeed. I look forward to competing with this team and a successful season in the PCSL.”
