Homestay Family Q&A
Everything you need to know about becoming a host family
-
Yes. Homestay families receive financial compensation to help cover food, utilities, and the general cost of hosting. The exact amount and payment structure can be discussed during the application process but usually varies between 700 - 1200$ per month.
-
Your role is similar to supporting an older teenager in your home. Players will have training, games, school or study commitments, and personal routines. You help by providing meals, a stable home routine, and basic guidance.
-
No. Some players may use public transportation, bike, walk, or arrange rides with teammates. If driving is needed, it should be clearly agreed on in advance.
-
Players need healthy meals to support their training. Homestay families usually provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or access to food for the player to prepare some meals themselves. Simple, balanced family meals are perfect.
But providing meals is not mandatory to become a homestay.
-
You are not alone. The Victoria Highlanders FC staff will support both the family and the player. If something is not working, we encourage early communication so small issues can be solved before they become bigger problems.
-
We will do our best to match families and players based on lifestyle, location, personality, allergies, pets, transportation, and family preferences. The goal is always to create a good fit for both sides.
-
A homestay family welcomes a student-athlete into their home while they take part in the Victoria Highlanders FC Residency Program. You provide a safe, supportive, and family-style environment where the player can live, grow, and feel at home while training and studying in Victoria.
-
The players are motivated young soccer athletes, usually between 16–19 years old, who come to Victoria to develop in a professional training environment. Many are from outside Vancouver Island, Canada, or even overseas, and are looking for a positive place to stay while pursuing their soccer goals.
-
A strong homestay environment helps players succeed on and off the field. Living with a local family gives them structure, comfort, support, and a true connection to the community. For many players, the homestay family becomes one of the most important parts of their experience.
-
A homestay family typically provides:
A private bedroom, access to bathroom and laundry, daily meals, Wi-Fi, and a welcoming family environment. Most importantly, you provide care, patience, communication, and a sense of belonging.
-
No. You do not need to have a soccer background. The most important thing is that you are caring, reliable, and interested in supporting a young person. Of course, families who enjoy sports often love being part of the journey, but it is not required.
-
The Residency Program runs from September to April with the option to stay until July.
Players usually go home over the 3 weeks winter break.
-
Yes. Many players enjoy living with families who have children. It can create a warm and fun environment. We simply make sure that expectations, space, and family routines are suitable for everyone.
-
Yes, in many cases. We just need to know about pets in the home so we can match players properly, especially if a player has allergies or is uncomfortable around certain animals.
-
Hosting can be a very rewarding experience. Families get to support a young athlete, learn about different cultures, build lasting relationships, and become directly connected to the Victoria Highlanders FC community.
Many host families say the player becomes part of the family.
-
Because you can make a real difference. A safe and caring home gives a young player the foundation to grow, train, study, and chase their goals. Your support can shape their experience in Canada and become something they remember for life.
-
The club helps with player matching, communication, expectations, and ongoing support throughout the stay. We want host families to feel confident, informed, and appreciated.
